Carey was born on July 28, 1972 in Memorial Union Hospital, Baltimore, MD.
Carey attended Roland Park Elementary School through grade 6 and then Friends School, also in Roland Park, for grades 7 – 12, graduating in 1990.
During the following four years Carey attended Ohio University, completing BA in English in 1994.
His first major employment took him to DC where he met his future wife, Traci Arbios of Fresno, CA. In 2000 they move to Fresno, CA. Soon thereafter, their efforts to vote were chronicled in a Fresno Bee Article “Glitch Dismays Voters.”
Carey and Traci married in 2001 and became the proud parents of Sydney Camden Schock on April 28, 2003.
Traci and Carey divorced in 2005.
Carey met Kathleen Rhodes at Pelco where she served as a writer and corporate spokesperson.

While working for Pelco, full-time, Carey enrolled in the MBA program at Fresno State University, graduating in 2009.
