Birth of Son Carey

Six years after Lisa’s birth in January 1966, we were settled in Baltimore in our new home and with Missy now a member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Lisa was in first grade at Roland Park elementary school and I was ensconced at Peabody, teaching and in the process of researching material for my dissertation. The 1972 New Year brought the exciting news that Missy was expecting. While speculation (no sonogram) centered on the likelihood that our baby would be a girl, it was a surprise when Missy gave birth to a bouncing baby boy at GBMC on July 28. While Lisa’s name had been determined years before she was born, Missy and I hadn’t given much thought for a boy’s name until after delivery. We were going to name him after David Dawson, Missy’s violin teacher and very close friend of the Baldwins, Missy’s parents. When we came up with Carey as his middle name, I dad a double take and realized D. C. Schock was not a moniker to bestow upon any child. I was mindful of what happened when my parents bought my brother, Paul Ivan Schock, a briefcase and had his initials engraved on the front.
