Building a Hal Taylor Rocking Chair

I first met Brad and Megan Myers in 2012 when they responded to a posting I submitted to Freecycle Westminsters (MD) offering hardwood scraps. When we talked at that initial meeting, Brad asked if I could help him with a woodworking project for his home: a kitchen recycle bin with a front-tilting door. Thus began a continuing friendship.

Several years later, after working together on a number of projects, Brad commented on the rocking chairs I had made saying that “maybe someday you can make one for Megan and me.” I responded that we should work together to make one. The following summer Brad took vacation leave from his job to come to the workshop daily so that we could build their rocking chair.

In deciding between a Sam Maloof or a Hal Taylor style rocking chair,

Brad choose the latter because Hal’s DVD book provided step-by- step directions as well as a check-sheet for each.

The chair now resides in pride of place in their home in Taneytown,, MD.
